Project of Flora of Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Mexico is recognized as a mega-diverse country as it possesses almost all types of plant communities existing on the planet. Ranking fourth place in species richness, it contains almost 10% of the world's flora, with about 1,000 endangered species according to NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. However, there are still regions of the country that have yet to be adequately explored, resulting in incomplete floristic data, as is the case with Aguascalientes. Located in the center of Mexico, it is one of the smallest states in the country, comprised predominantly of flat topography, a semi-dry climate, and mostly xerophytic vegetation. For many years the flora of Aguascalientes has been studied, however, in 2012 its study has been strengthened thanks to the financial support of the CONABIO (Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad). The objective of further study is to ultimately create a comprehensive floristic inventory through exhaustive fieldwork and a deep herbarium examination to determine the richness, diversity, distribution and current status of species populations. So far, it has recorded 155 families, 711 genera and 1805 species, 32 of which are new records for the state. Eleven species are included in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010; 10 in the category subject of special protection and only Albizia plurijuga in the category of threatened. This work will allow preservation of the genetic diversity, species diversity, and habitat diversity of the Aguascalientes flora. Also, it will allow enhanced management and conservation of our plant communities, publishing the Aguascalientes Red List, and increasing the knowledge of the Mexican flora.
