Recent molecular phylogenetic results indicate that Gordonia is polyphyletic, with species occurring in two tribes of Theaceae, leading to the suggestion to resurrect the older generic names Polyspora and Laplacea. However, the taxonomic sampling in these studies was low, especially of species from tropical Asia. Here, we examine evolutionary relationships of the four species of Gordonia endemic to Sri Lanka. Results of our analyses of chloroplast and mitochondrial markers show that species from Sri Lanka are closely related to taxa sampled from China. These results are consistent with an analysis of seedcoat micromorphology. Together, these findings support renaming species endemic to Sri Lanka as Polyspora. Broader Impacts:
