Miocene woods from the Guacamayas locality, Marquez de Comillas, Chiapas, Mexico.

Two new wood types from the Miocene Las Guacamayas locality, municipality of Marquis de Comillas, Chiapas, collected by members of the Laboratory of Paleobotany Institute of Geology, UNAM, and the Museum of Paleontology Eliseo Palacios of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, are described. Their wood anatomical features suggest affinity to Lauraceae and Humiriaceae. The presence of simple perforation plate, helical thickenings in vessel elements, presence of chambered fibers, oil cells between the fibers, vessel element to ray pits of different sizes, rays with procumbent cells in their body and upright or square cells in their tails, idioblasts with rhomboid or cubic crystals and scanty diffuse axial parenchyma suggest the presence of a member of Lauraceae. Anatomical organization of this wood type resembles the xylem of Nectandra, Alseodaphne and Actinodaphne. The second wood type is characterized by the presence of scalariform perforation plate, and vasicentric tracheids, vessel element to ray pits similar in shape and size to intervessel pits, axial parenchyma scanty and vasicentric, and rays composed of procumbent upright and square suggesting the presence of a member of Humiriaceae. These wood characters are most similra to Sacoglottis. In addition to these woods, members of Leguminosae have been documented from this locality. The association reflects a diverse pale flora common in the humid tropics, suggesting that in the Miocene of Chiapas a community similar to a rainforest was present.
