Vargas, Oscar [1].

Revision of the genus Diplostephium (Asteraceae, Astereae) for Colombia.

Diplostephium comprises 110 species distributed from Costa Rica to Chile. Colombia has 62 species listed, Peru 39, Ecuador 26, Venezuela 10, Chile 3, Costa Rica 2, and Bolivia 1. The majority of the species are found at the páramos, with the remaining found in cloud forest, punas, jalcas, and desert shrublands. The genus was extensively studied earlier by the Spanish botanist José Cuatrecasas, who described more than 90 new Diplostephium taxa and published two revisions (1943, 1969). While the first revision accounted for 64 species worldwide, the second focused on the Colombian territory, accounting for 53 species. The present study updates the taxonomy of the genus for the Colombian species. The revision comprises a key, a description, a taxonomic treatment, distribution maps and illustrations for each of the 62 species. A new species is described while two species are synonymized due to new evidence.
