Abstract Detail

A Colloquium Honoring Leslie D. Gottlieb

Sytsma, Kenneth [1].

Clarkia, Clocks, California, and the Charismatic (Leslie D. Gottlieb).

I was introduced to Clarkia (Onagraceae) while working as a post-doc in Les Gottlieb’s lab in the mid 1980’s. In a series of elegant papers spanning several decades, Les used Clarkia as a model system for addressing fundamental, previously unexplored, and often ground-breaking questions at a multi-faceted interface of population genetics, morphology and its genetic basis, gene duplications, speciation, and phylogenetics. Our current understanding of the genus based on molecular phylogenetic studies will be presented and compared to his latest work. The temporal diversification of Clarkia from an origin in the Miocene to recent Quaternary speciation is presented based on family-wide, fossil-calibrated chronogram. Lastly, a biogeographical analysis of Clarkia within California is coupled with this chronogram.
