Building partnerships in the Bahamas: The Island Flora.

In 1982 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden plant taxonomists Donovan Correll and Helen Correll published the latest comprehensive flora of the Bahama archipelago. This project was part of the extensive horticultural and research program that this botanic garden developed with native plants from the archipelago. In 2012, Bahamas National Trust and the College of the Bahamas in association with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Florida International University, and the New York Botanic Garden undertook several joint initiatives to celebrate the 30 anniversary of the publication of this flora. These activities included joint plant exploration expeditions, an international symposium on Bahamian plant biodiversity, the publication of a special issue of an international plant research journal focusing on Bahamian botany, and the developing of a program to establish institutional exchanges oriented towards conservation, science, and education. This model has led to synergy between the institutions and we believe that is applicable to other Caribbean Islands who want to establish partnerships with other botanic gardens or universities.
