The ascent of divergent breeding systems: evolution of dioecy in Miconia.

Within Miconia, a megadiverse Neotropical genus, a clade of ca. 500 species has radiated in the Andes and the Caribbean. This predominately Andean clade also contains the only documented incidences of dioecy in the genus. A survey of dioecy was completed for the genus Miconia. All documented dioecious species occur in Miconia section Cremanium, as currently circumscribed. Based on herbarium and field observations, sixty-five species (ca. 30% of the section) were determined to exhibit morphologically divergent sexual expression consistent with a dioecious breeding system. We reconstructed a phylogeny of the Andean clade with two nuclear ribosomal genes (ETS, ITS) and four plastid intergenic spaces (trnS-G, psaI-accD, atpH-F and psbK-L). The phlogeny of this clade is largely concordant with geographic distribution. As inferred from character optimization, dioecy has evolved independently at least four times: in the Caribbean, Central America, the northern Andes, and the southern Andes. The last group represents a radiation of some 45 species in Peru and Bolivia, occurring at mid elevation. The prominence of complex breeding systems in Miconia almost exclusively at higher altitudes solicits broader evolutionary inquiries into selective genetic mechanisms and pollination syndromes in this group.
